Phasing out single use plastic bags is clearly the right thing for the environment, but its going to take some getting used to for people like myself and my family that are not big environmentalists or eco warriors but ARE interested in learning how we can make simple steps to help the environment and teach our children to do the same.

From July 1st most states will have banned single use plastic bags and our local shops have done this for the last few months as a trial for Coles. It's taught me that there are some simple steps we can take to help the environment and that are not too overwhelming but that also have opened my eyes up to the waste that single use plastic really is .

Since using the reuseable shopping bags my son and I have started talking more about the environment , about the animals that are affected by humans and their plastic , about how there are only limited resources in the world and that we all need to take steps (even small ones) to assisting in keeping where we live on this planet a cleaner place.

I love meal planning for my family dinners as without it generally it all goes pear shaped ! This allows me to organise on the weekend the shopping for all the meals and then in the weekday mornings what I need to get out for the dinner before work and if I need to get anything on the way home. It also lets me know exactly what needs to happen when I walk in the door and the kids are in the middle of arsenic hour after being at school and kinder all day !

We just got the most gorgeous new range of LunchBot and Kids Konserve Stainless Steel Lunchboxes in store.

Now that I am on a super strict lifestyle of Gluten free , Grain free living for health reasons and the kids are eating Gluten , dairy and soy free for health and behavioural reasons I've started packing food for everywhere we go.

But also playing on my mind as the news emerges about the chemicals in plastic that can leach into our foods I've started researching into alternative containers we can use just as easily as plastic. I honestly had no idea of the wasted plastic and rubbish that is starting to clog up our landfills either ! (I know , I know , but I'm new to this caring about our environment thing !!)

With winter well and truly on its way and the weather getting cooler, unfortunately also comes the constant stream of coughs and colds or at best the threat of coughs and colds. Especially when you have little ones !

I’ve been using one of those chemist vaporisers for years with my kids, when they get all sniffly, you know the ones we had when we were kids ?

Filled with hot water and lots of vicks or eucalyptus oil to inhale whilst we slept. They worked a treat , however the room was always SO humid after using them and the window and window sills in the morning were drenched with water which in turn promotes mould and bacteria !
